Albuquerque / THE ROOM
Why this room makes the map
The Albuquerque Museum keeps the city's art and its history under one Antoine Predock roof at the edge of Old Town, with more than 50 works set along the paths of an outdoor sculpture garden. It also stages live performances in its amphitheater, and the plaza's restaurants are a short walk away when the doors close.
About the room
The museum opened in 1967 in the old municipal airport building and moved to its Predock-designed home at 2000 Mountain Road NW in 1979, with an expansion finished in 2005. The city runs it, and the collection spans about 400 years of the Middle Rio Grande Valley, from conquistador armor and colonial weavings to Southwestern painting and a photo archive of more than 100,000 images.
Before you go
Museum visitors get three free hours in the lot behind the building on 19th Street NW, which saves hunting for a spot in Old Town. Admission is free on Sunday mornings; check the museum's page on cabq.gov for current hours and amphitheater programs.
