Albuquerque Social Club
Albuquerque / THE ROOM
Why this room makes the map
The SOCH traces its roots to a bar called The Heights that opened in the early 1970s, which makes it the oldest gay bar in Albuquerque. It is a member-owned private club on Central Avenue in Nob Hill, with drag nights and karaoke on the calendar and a stage in its larger, darker second room.
About the room
The club had settled on the Albuquerque Social Club name by 1983, after several earlier names. During the AIDS crisis, members held services, remembrances and drag fundraisers inside. It runs as a nonprofit where every member counts as a part owner, and a manager once told the Weekly Alibi it was like a gay Cheers.
Before you go
You must be 21 to enter; non-members come in as registered guests and usually pay a cover, while members get into most events free. The club is closed early in the week, so check abqsocial.org or its Facebook page for current hours.
