El Pinto Restaurant & Cantina
Albuquerque / THE ROOM

Why this room makes the map
El Pinto started in 1962 with 10 tables under the North Valley cottonwoods and now seats more than 1,200 people across five patios, three dining rooms and a cantina. The tequila bar stocks more than 175 tequilas and 50 mezcals, which the family bills as the largest tequila bar in New Mexico.
About the room
Jack and Connie Thomas opened it to serve the recipes of Josephina Chavez-Griggs, and their twin sons Jim and John grew it into the compound on 4th Street NW it is today. The family salsa went from the table to grocery shelves nationwide, and the property keeps about 200 pasture-raised hens on site.
Before you go
It's at 10500 4th St NW, a good drive north of downtown. Patio season and weekend nights fill up, so reserve through elpinto.com or by phone, and check the site for current hours.
