Gutierrez-Hubbell House
Albuquerque / THE ROOM
Why this room makes the map
This South Valley adobe has been a family home, a trading post, a stagecoach stop and the local post office, and today its grounds host free public programs. Saturdays in the growing season bring the South Valley Growers Market, and docents lead tours of the house and plaza.
About the room
The oldest rooms date to the 1820s, and the house grew through the 1850s and 1860s as James Lawrence Hubbell and Juliana Gutiérrez y Chávez raised twelve children in it. Bernalillo County bought it with the surrounding farmland in 2000, restored it, and made it the centerpiece of the county's first open space; it is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Before you go
Admission is free, and donations go to the Gutiérrez-Hubbell House Alliance. The house keeps limited days while the trails along the acequia stay open dawn to dusk, so check gutierrez-hubbellhouse.org before you head down Isleta Boulevard.
