Why this room makes the map
The Sunshine opened on May 1, 1924, as Albuquerque's first movie palace, and it now runs general admission concerts for up to about 1,000 people. It is a standing room hall with an open floor, a balcony and a 21 and over bar, downtown on Central Avenue.
About the room
The El Paso firm Trost & Trost designed the Sunshine Building for theater owner Joseph Barnett, a yellow brick, reinforced concrete block with offices above the theater. It stopped showing first-run movies in 1974, closed in the 1980s and was remodeled into a music venue. The building went on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
Before you go
Most shows are all ages, some are 21 and over, and there is no re-entry once you are inside. Seats are few and first come, so arrive early if you need one, and check sunshinetheaterlive.com for door times.
