The Hiland Theater
Albuquerque / THE ROOM
Why this room makes the map
The Hiland opened on Central Avenue on April 20, 1950, and the Streamline Moderne front still looks like Route 66 at its most optimistic. These days the stage belongs to dancers, and the public shows put young performers in a room built for movie premieres.
About the room
William Burke designed the theater at 4804 Central Ave SE, and it ran as a movie house with close to 1,200 seats. Bernalillo County and NDI New Mexico took it on together in 2009, and the renovated building reopened in 2012 as home base for NDI's dance programs.
Before you go
Most of the week the Hiland is a working dance school, so check ndi-nm.org for public performances and ticketing before you go.
